Problem
In class we watched a video about a hover board and people using that hover board at a skate park. We watched how the hover board hovered off the ground with a actual human on top of it. At the end of the video, our teacher told us that it’s obviously fake. But it’s not impossible to do. He went on to explain how scientist have been researching this for years, and still haven’t been able to figure it out.
So he assigned us our next project. Our next project was to construct a working hover board. The hover board didn’t have to carry a human, or carry anything on it at all. It just had to hover at least 1/4 of an inch off the ground. After school I went home and did some research on how to make one. I found out that I could make a small magnetic field and balance a hover board inside that field using neodymium magnets.

Solution
I did some more research and found out the materials I needed to get in order to make my magnetic field and my hover board. First I needed to get a metal clothes hanger from my closet. Next I needed to go to Home Depot and find neodymium magnets that were the right size for my project and I needed at least eight magnets for my project. Then I needed to go to Walmart and find a specific type of antenna called a loop antenna. And I also needed a AA battery and some Styrofoam as a base.
To start building the magnetic field, you have to grab the metal hanger and bend it into a square and leave the top hanger part as normal. Next you place four magnets in each corner in a specific pattern. The pattern that you needed was the two magnets across from each other were the same polarity and the other two were the different polarity (NSNS). then save that for later. To build a hover board, you have to cut the Styrofoam in the shape of a hover board. Then in the middle place, four magnets in the same pattern as the clothes hanger.

For me, I think this particular project was very fun for me to do. I got to drive around to different stores to get the materials which was very energetic. And this project opened me up to some science that I never knew about. But in the future I don’t think I would ever try to do this ever again.
